ATTENDING UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI DENTAL HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT

Background: Due to the unstable Kenyan economy and other factors, the cost of dental treatment in the country is gradually on the rise. This seems to have a direct profound negative effect on oral healthcare seeking practices and choice of treatment among the Kenyan population

Objective: To identify primary sources of financing of dental treatment among patients attending University of Nairobi Dental Hospital

Design:This was8J descriptive cross-sectional study

Study area: University of Nairobi Dental Hospital

Study participants: Patients seeking treatment at University of Nairobi Dental Hospital.

Materials and Methods: The participants were126 persons who had received dental treatment in the various dental clinics at UDH who were recruited and int~ed in the respective clinics

usingan interviewer-administered questionnaire. The variable~ollected included level of education, occupation, sources of finance and motivation of the patient.

Dataanalysis: Data was analyzed using SPSSto determine the common sources of finance and presented in the form of tables and graphs.

Results:PersonalSavings was determined t-o-b.e..the main Source of Finance for Patients seeking

Oral Healthcare at University of Nairobi Dental Hospital with 54.8% followed by~y {30.2%L Loans{4.8%L Family {4%L Organizations and Insurance {2.4% each}.

 

Conciusions:Financeshave a direct impact on Oral Health seeking behavior whereby patients fail to seekoral healthcare owing to lack of finances. Also availability of finances has a direct

impacton acceptance of treatment plan advised to the patient.

Recommendations:lmplementation of insurance packages that cover dental costs and

increasedawareness on the advantages of seeking early treatment early to prevent disease

progressionand keep treatment costs down.
