DETERMINATION OF COMMON TREATMENT NEEDS OF PATIENTS ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI DENTAL HOSPITAL

SUMMARY:

The common dental diseases include; dental caries, periodontal diseases, orthodontic and prosthodontic treatment needs. Dental caries and periodontal diseases are distributed in all ages. Orthodontic condition is majorly of much importance before puberty where as, Prosthodontic conditions are mostly of significance above 35 years of age (8).

The descriptive cross-sectional study was aimed at establishing the treatment needs of the common dental diseases of all patients attending the University of Nairobi Dental Hospital, between May-June, 2000. A total of 177 subjects were examined comprising of 77 males and 100 females. The subjects examined for dental caries, periodontal diseases, prosthodontic and orthodontic conditions. The findings were recorded in the clinical examination data sheet designed by the investigator.

The results of the study showed that caries treatment need Qaf/o) was the greatest need of patients attending the UO.N. dental hospital. This was followed by periodontal treatment need (68.9% of the patients) while prosthodontic treatment need formed 21.3% of the patients. Orthodontic treatment need was the lowest with 5.7% of the patients.

The results will be a valuable contribution to the treatment, preventive and control programmes applied in the institution and the community catered for with the aim of reducing the common dental diseases
