PATTERN OF OCCURRENCE OF TEMPOROMANDffiULAR JOINT DISLOCA TIONS AS SEEN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NAmOBI DENTAL HOSPITAL.

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

Advances in imaging techniques have allowed for a greater understanding of TMJ
pathologies and a myriad of conservative and surgical techniques have evolved for the
management of TMJ dislocation. However, very little has been done in terms of
highlighting and provoking greater interest in the epidemiology and management ofTMJ
dislocation. This study aims to fill these gaps in knowledge and thus offer clinicians a
guide on the expected distribution ofTMJ dislocation within our setup.
The main objective of this study is to determine the pattern of occurrence, etiology
and treatment modalities offered for TMJ dislocations at the OMS department. This study
will be a descriptive cross-sectional study using patients' hospital records and will be
conducted at the UNDH between September to October 2005. The study population
consists of all patients diagnosed with dislocation of the TMJ from January 1995 to July
2005; at the OMS department.
Data collection will be done by locating the relevant records from the registry. Vital
information will then be retrieved from the records using a data collection form. The vital
data to be retrieved will include patient information and variables such as age, sex,
occupation, ethnicity, diagnosis and etiology of dislocation, predisposing factors,
associated injuries and treatment modalities offered. Data collected will be analyzed both
manually and with the aid of SPSS statistical analysis computer software.
The results of this study will go a long way in provoking greater interest in the
epidemiology and management of TMJ dislocations and serve as a reference guide for
clinicians within the department.
