Printer-friendly versionPDF version

ABSTRACT
Background: Periodontal diseases arc widespread conditions and there arc many conventional
ways of assessing the condition or the periodontium. Dental practitioners examine the
periodontium in different ways. However, the most commonest examination always involves the
use of the periodontal probe. Based on casual communication with dentists and expert
communication from periodontiststs, it seems that many dentists may not be examining the
peridontium in their daily practice.
Objective: To assess techniques used by dentists in periodontal health examination in Nairobi.
Study design: This will be a descriptive cross-sectional study.
Study Area: The study area will be Nairobi. The study population will include dental
practitioners in areas of Nairobi including the Central Business District, Parklands among others
areas. These dentists will include those working in private clinics, Governments hospitals, the
University of Nairobi, mission hospitals and those employed by the Kcnyatta National Hospital.
Methodology: A self-administered questionnaire will be distributed to a randomly selected
sample drawn from a study population.
Data Presentation: Data will be analyzed manually and by the use of a computer using SPSS
programme.
Perceived benefits: The findings of the study will determine how the periodontium is examined
by dentists in Nairobi. Results from this study will be used to promote the importance of
examining the periodontium and the various techniques that can be used for examination to
improve the care of periodontal patients.
