Dietary habits and caries experience among females aged 15-19 years in two secondary schools in Nairobi

Objective: To determine dietary habits and caries experience among first year female students at the University of Nairobi
Study design: A descriptive cross-sectional study
Study area: The study will be carried out at UON located in Nairobi.
Methodology: The study population will comprise of 200 female students in their first year of study. Stratified random sampling method will be used to select a sample size. Students will consent by signing a consent form after which they will be interviewed using self administered questionnaires to determine oral hygiene and dietary practices. Students will then be examined clinically for decayed, missing and filled teeth.
Perceived benefit: Data and information collected from this study will be a useful record for comparing the caries experience in relation to diet and oral health practices among two different populations, teenage girls in boarding secondary school and those in day secondary schools. It will also be useful as reference for future related studies. It will also educate students on the benefits and risks associated with the various dietary and oral health habits. The results will also be submitted as a project for the partial fulfillment of the requirement leading to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree.
