THE ORAL HEALTH STATUS IN HIV SEROPOSITIVE CHILDREN AMONG HOSPITALIZED CHILDREN IN A NAIROBI HOSPITAL.

The Human Immuno Virus (HIV) impairs the immune system causing an Increase In the
prevalence and severity of both normal and opportunistic infections in the HIV seropositive
children. The severity of the oral cavity diseases also varies depending on the health and the
body's defence mechanisms of the patient.
A descriptive cross sectional study will be conducted to determine the oral health status among
HIV seropositive children admitted at Kenyatta National hospital. All the HIV seropositive
children admitted in the paediatric wards during the period of data collection will be examined.
The data will be collected using clinical examination forms The carious experience, gingival
bleeding index, plaque score and presence of common oral lesions will be recorded and
analysis done using the SPSS info 11.0.
The aim of this study is to determine the oral health status in HIV positive children and help
health care providers to plan for the special treatment needs for the HIV seropositive children
and add more information on this area, which has insufficient baseline data.
