BACKGROUND
The formulation for this dental powder is inspired from an ancient Indian powder which is still
being used in remote areas where modem dentrifices are not available. The dental powder is
homemade, with its three main constituents being alum, turmeric and salt all ground into a fine
powder.
OBJECTIVE
To study the effect of a homemade dental powder on a population of Streptococcus mutans.
STUDY DESIGN
Randomized Controlled Laboratory Study
SETTING
The study will be carried out in the microbiology laboratory, college of Health Sciences,
University of Nairobi. It is located at Kenyatta National Hospital, Hospital Road, Upper Hill
Nairobi.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Streptococcus mutans shall be cultured and the disc diffusion technique employed, where the
discs have various concentrations of the dental powder, alum, turmeric, cloves and salt, which
has been made by titrating with distilled water so as to form a spectrum of concentrations. The
area of the clear zones on the agar plates shall then be measured using a graph paper to assess the
effect of the dental powder on the bacterial population.
PERCEIVED BENEFITS
The findings from this study will determine the potential for homemade powder to effectively
control oral microorganisms and thus determine whether it may be used as a cheap substitute for
a dentifrice. The study will also form part of my partial fulfillment of a bachelor of dental
surgery
